As I find my 8 year Army career coming to a close (2 months to go!) I am left with one of life's greatest questions; "What do I want to be when I grow up?". I graduated with a degree in Sociology from Western Michigan University in 2009 with no plan on actually using it. I knew I was going to be going active duty Army and doing nothing with my degree. I was going to be a Quatermaster Officer (basically logistics). While I have learned a lot and grown tremendously being in the Army, it is time for me to move on. My husband is still active duty and we have two small children (4 and 2), we want some sort of stability for them.
That being said, back to the original question. What DO I want to be when I grow up? For the past year I have been struggling with this decision. I do not see myself using the logistics knowledge I have learned with the Army and what would I really do with my Sociology degree? About two months ago it finally came to me. Event planner. At first I thought it was a little far fetched and just a dream. However, I started mentioning it to my friends and family and they all told me the same thing. "You would be great at that!" I was actually very surprised and flattered. Maybe I really could do this?! Whether it's a going away party or just having people over to watch a game I always go all out. I find myself at work thinking about dips and cupcakes instead of focusing on the task at hand.
So here I am. I have decided to start this blog to document my journey on exploring the idea of becoming an event planner. It's a place where I can put my ideas, thoughts and pictures of parties I plan (or help plan). I am at a very exciting time in my life. Transitioning back to being a "civilian" is great but there is also a lot of unknown which makes it a little scary. I know I will miss the Army and I would do it all over again. I have met great people and some of my best friends while serving.
All the best,
Alice
